Mara Jade Shin Guard Molds

Regular price $60.00 $0.00

These are the molds that I used to cast fiberglass Mara Jade shin guards. I have cast dozens of shin guards on these molds but they're still in surprisingly good shape! I'm not really working in fiberglass very much anymore, so these molds have been sitting in the shop for a while now and could use a new home.

Please keep in mind that this is a very challenging design to cast in fiberglass. Those little ridges that go around the guards like to collect air pockets, and the little gap in the mold that creates the front overlap on each side is a real pain to cast without getting air bubbles, too. It's easy enough to repair air bubbles with a bit of bondo or a drizzle of resin, but I'm a perfectionist and I prefer to get a good casting from the molds, so each casting tends to take a while!

The molds are made of Rebound silicone, and they are supported by fiberglass shells. I've had to add more silicone around the edges over the years to support their hold on the fiberglass backing shell, so the edges are a bit messy now.

I made these molds when I was a skinny 20-something and I sculpted them directly on fiberglass casts of my legs, so they do not fit large calves. I didn't even leave much room for boots, so I always had to wear boots with thin vinyl uppers.

It just occurred to me that I'm not sure what shape the knee guard mold is in. If I still have the mold, or the master for the knees, I will include them as well.

To wear the shin guards, I used the fuzzy side of industrial strength velcro to create a "hinge" to hold the shin guards closed in the front. I slid them over my boots, and then slid little 3-inch wide pieces of sew-on velcro under the edge at the top and bottom in the back to hold the back of the clamshells closed. (I had squares of the industrial strength velcro attached to the inside back of the pieces.) Sometimes I was really active and the back closure just didn't want to stay snug, so in those cases I cut little pieces of the stick on velcro, about 1.5 inches wide and a quarter inch tall, and I stuck those to the back of the shin guards, right under one of the ridges so it wasn't very noticeable. That really helped hold them closed, and I just peeled it off when I was ready to take off the guards.

If you purchase these and want to make shin guards for others, you are welcome to do so. Consider it an open-use sale.
